LEDs are the technology behind LED growlights.  An LED is a semiconductor light that doesn't make use of a filament.  Where in traditional lights, the current would pass through the filament, in LED growlights, they instead flow from anode to cathode. Inside electrons recombine to release photons (energy).  This type of technology has many advantages, which is why LED grow lights are beginning the norm for growing plants indoors.

LED Growlights vs HID

For quite awhile, HID was the preferred method of indoor growing.  HID is an electrical lamp which discharges a high intensity light greater than that of traditional fluorescent or incandescent bulbs.  In general this means they give off a greater amount of light output per watt than those other forms.  LED entered the market and immediately gained popularity due to their high efficiency. LED grow lights are  a combination of multiple low-watt light sources that work together.  The light that they create has a much greater portion of photosynthetic spectrum light than HID light sources.  

Another benefit of LED growlights are that they generate far less heat than HID.  Where as the extra light generated by HID converts to heat, the majority of light wavelengths of LED grow lights are targeted directly towards the plants themselves.  Heat reduction means less need of fans, ducting or air conditioning, and can prevent the burning of plant fringes.  And, an additional bonus is that these are extremely long-lasting, with 50,000 hours (an estimated 6 full years) of continual usage not only possible, but often the norm for LED growlights.  Imagine all of the saving generated by the usage of LED grow lights in opposition to HID lighting solutions.

The more the beam is spread out the less intense it is.
